Ocean Acidification
Ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. This decrease in pH makes the ocean more acidic and less alkaline. The primary cause of ocean acidification is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. As the ocean absorbs more CO2, the pH decreases, making it more difficult for marine organisms such as corals, shellfish, and plankton to build and maintain their shells and skeletons. This can have significant impacts on the entire marine ecosystem, including the food chain and the livelihoods of people who depend on it.
