Ordinary Seaman


An Ordinary Seaman is the lowest rank in the deck department of a merchant ship. They are responsible for general maintenance and cleaning of the ship, cargo handling, and standing watch. Ordinary Seamen work under the supervision of Able Seamen and Bosuns, and are required to perform a variety of tasks such as painting, cleaning, and repairing equipment. They are also responsible for handling lines during mooring and unmooring operations, and for keeping the ship's deck and equipment clean and in good condition. The position of Ordinary Seaman is often a starting point for those who wish to pursue a career in the maritime industry.
