Panting

Panting is a phenomenon that occurs in ships when the hull is subjected to wave-induced vibrations. It is a rhythmic deformation of the hull that occurs transversely to the ship's centerline. This deformation is caused by the alternate loading and unloading of the ship's structure as it moves through the waves. Panting can cause fatigue damage to the hull and can lead to cracking and failure of the structure. To prevent panting, ships are designed with stiffening members and other structural features that increase the hull's resistance to deformation. Additionally, ships can be operated at reduced speeds in heavy seas to reduce the effects of panting.
