Physical Access Controls
In the maritime context, Physical Access Controls refer to the measures and systems implemented to regulate and restrict access to a ship, port facility, or other maritime infrastructure. These controls are designed to prevent unauthorized access, protect personnel, safeguard sensitive information, and secure physical assets. They can include a wide range of mechanisms, from traditional locks and keys to advanced biometric systems. Physical Access Controls are a critical component of a comprehensive maritime security strategy. They help to deter, detect, and delay threats, including piracy, terrorism, smuggling, and other forms of criminal activity. In addition, they can also play a role in emergency response and recovery operations, by controlling access to affected areas and facilitating the movement of emergency personnel and resources. Physical Access Controls must be designed and implemented in accordance with relevant international standards and regulations, such as the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
