Preventer

A preventer is a line used to prevent the boom from accidentally jibing (moving suddenly from one side to the other due to a shift in wind direction) and causing damage or injury. It is typically rigged from the end of the boom to a point on the deck or to the bow. In heavy weather, a preventer can also be used to control the boom and reduce the strain on the rigging. Preventers are commonly used on sailing yachts and other vessels with booms.
