Rogue Waves

Rogue waves, also known as freak waves, are unexpectedly large and spontaneous ocean surface waves that occur in open water, and are a threat to ships and offshore structures. They are defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height of the surrounding sea state. Rogue waves can be caused by the constructive interference of smaller waves, or by the presence of strong currents or eddies. They can appear suddenly and without warning, and can cause significant damage to ships and offshore structures. Rogue waves are a major concern for the maritime industry, and efforts are being made to better understand and predict their occurrence.
