SafetyNET
SafetyNET is a maritime communication service developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). It is an automated satellite-based system designed to disseminate maritime safety information (MSI) including navigational warnings, meteorological warnings and forecasts, and other urgent safety-related messages to ships. SafetyNET is primarily used for the broadcast of MSI to ships in the open sea and coastal waters. The system is designed to work in conjunction with the NAVTEX system, which covers similar information but is intended for ships closer to shore. SafetyNET messages are broadcasted via Inmarsat satellites and can be received by all ships equipped with a compatible Inmarsat-C or Mini-C terminal. The service is available globally and around the clock, ensuring that vital safety information can be received by ships at any time and in any location.
