International Maritime Organization (IMO)
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent marine pollution from ships. It is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. The IMO is also involved in legal matters, including liability and compensation issues and the facilitation of international maritime traffic. It has established a number of codes, conventions, and other instruments, which are used by member states to develop their own national maritime legislation. The IMO's work supports the UN SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), particularly Goal 14: Life Below Water, which seeks to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
