Seafloor Spreading

Seafloor spreading is a geological process that occurs at the mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity and then gradually moves away from the ridge. As the new crust forms, it pushes the older crust away from the ridge, causing the ocean floor to spread and widen. This process is driven by convection currents in the Earth's mantle, which cause the plates to move apart. Seafloor spreading is a key component of plate tectonics, the theory that explains the movement of the Earth's lithosphere. It has important implications for the formation of ocean basins, the distribution of continents, and the evolution of life on Earth.
