Seismic Waves

Seismic waves are waves of energy that travel through the Earth's layers, including the oceanic and continental crusts, as a result of an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or other seismic activity. These waves can be classified into two main types: body waves and surface waves. Body waves include P-waves (primary waves) and S-waves (secondary waves), which travel through the Earth's interior. Surface waves, on the other hand, travel along the Earth's surface and are responsible for the majority of the damage caused by earthquakes. Seismic waves are important in the maritime context as they can cause tsunamis, which are large ocean waves that can travel long distances and cause significant damage to coastal areas.
