Body Waves

In maritime context, body waves refer to the waves that propagate through the water column, as opposed to surface waves that propagate along the water-air interface. Body waves can be further classified into two types: primary waves (P-waves) and secondary waves (S-waves). P-waves are longitudinal waves that travel faster than S-waves and can pass through both solids and liquids. S-waves are transverse waves that can only pass through solids. Body waves are important in seismology as they are the first waves to be detected by seismographs during an earthquake, and their speed and direction can provide information about the location and magnitude of the earthquake.
