Shear Legs

Shear legs are two inclined poles or spars that are joined together at the top by a crosspiece and are used to hoist heavy loads aboard a ship. They are typically made of wood or steel and are supported by a tripod or A-frame structure on the deck. The load is attached to a block and tackle system that is suspended from the crosspiece, and the shear legs are then raised or lowered to move the load to its desired location. Shear legs are commonly used in maritime operations such as loading and unloading cargo, and in shipbuilding and repair yards for moving heavy equipment and materials.
