Ship Security Alert Systems
Ship Security Alert Systems (SSAS) are a part of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities. The SSAS is designed to raise the alarm ashore when the security of the ship is under threat or has been compromised. The system does not sound an alarm on the ship. The SSAS allows the ship to send a security alert to the ship's administration, which, in turn, notifies the appropriate response agencies. The alert identifies the ship, its location, and indicates that the security of the ship is under threat. The system is activated by the ship's master or other authorized person. It is a silent alarm system that does not give any indication on the ship that the security alert has been sent. The SSAS is required on all passenger ships, including high-speed craft, cargo ships, and mobile offshore drilling units.
