Skeg

A skeg is a small keel-like structure located at the stern of a vessel, extending downwards below the waterline. It is typically used to improve the directional stability of the vessel, especially at low speeds. Skegs are commonly found on small boats, such as kayaks and canoes, as well as larger vessels, such as sailboats and motor yachts. They can be made of various materials, including wood, fiberglass, and metal. Skegs are particularly useful in rough water conditions, as they help to prevent the vessel from being pushed off course by waves or currents.
