Directional Stability

Directional stability is the inherent ability of a ship to maintain a straight course, resist yawing and maintain a steady heading in a calm sea without any external forces. It is the ability of a ship to return to its original course after being subjected to a disturbance. Directional stability is achieved by the proper design of the hull, rudder, and keel. A ship with good directional stability will be easier to handle and maneuver, especially in rough seas. However, excessive directional stability can make a ship difficult to turn, which can be dangerous in emergency situations.
