Sliding Ways

Sliding ways are inclined tracks, typically made of wood, down which a ship is launched into the water. They are used as an alternative to a dry dock for ship maintenance and repair. The ship is brought onto the ways with the help of a cradle or carriage, which is then greased to reduce friction. The weight of the ship and the force of gravity are used to slide the ship down the ways and into the water. Sliding ways have been used for centuries and are still used today in some shipyards around the world.
