Ways

Ways refer to the inclined planes or tracks on which a ship is built or repaired. They are used to launch newly constructed vessels into the water and to haul out ships for maintenance and repairs. Ways consist of a series of wooden blocks or cradles that support the hull of the ship and allow it to slide down into the water or be pulled up onto land. The process of launching a ship on ways involves greasing the tracks with tallow or soap and then using a capstan or windlass to pull the vessel down the ways and into the water. Ways have been used for centuries and are still in use today in many shipyards around the world.
