Sounding Pipe

A sounding pipe is a long, narrow tube used to measure the depth of water in a vessel's hold or tanks. It is lowered through a small opening in the top of the tank or hold until it reaches the bottom, and then the depth of the water is read off the graduated scale on the pipe. Sounding pipes are commonly used on ships to determine the amount of fuel, water, or cargo remaining in the tanks. They are also used to check for the presence of water in the bilges. Sounding pipes can be made of various materials, including brass, copper, or steel, and may be fitted with a valve or cock to control the flow of liquid.
