Sparks

Sparks refer to the electrical discharges that occur between two metal objects with different electrical potentials, such as the antenna and the ship's mast. In maritime context, sparks can be dangerous as they can ignite flammable gases or vapors that may be present in the surrounding air, leading to explosions or fires. To prevent this, ships are equipped with a device called a 'spark arrestor' which is designed to prevent sparks from escaping into the atmosphere. Additionally, all electrical equipment on board must be properly maintained and grounded to prevent the buildup of static electricity, which can also cause sparks.
