Tack

In sailing, tack refers to the maneuver of turning the bow of the boat through the wind so that the wind changes from one side of the boat to the other side. This is done by turning the boat's bow into the wind until the sails begin to luff, then turning the boat's stern through the wind while simultaneously adjusting the sails to take advantage of the wind on the new side. Tacking is an essential maneuver for sailing upwind, as it allows the boat to make progress towards its destination while sailing against the wind.
