Tacking

Tacking is a sailing maneuver that involves turning the bow of the boat through the wind so that the wind changes from one side of the boat to the other side. This is done by turning the boat's bow into the wind until the sails begin to luff, then turning the boat's stern through the wind while the sails fill on the opposite side. Tacking is used to change the direction of the boat when sailing upwind or to avoid obstacles. It requires good communication between the helmsman and the crew, as well as careful attention to wind direction and sail trim.
