Tholes

Tholes are wooden pegs or metal pins that are mounted vertically on the gunwale of a boat or ship. They are used to hold the oars in place while rowing, and to provide a pivot point for the oars to move back and forth. Tholes are an important part of traditional rowing techniques, and are still used on many small boats and traditional vessels today. They are typically made of hardwood or metal, and are designed to withstand the forces of rowing and the elements of the marine environment.
