UHF (Ultra High Frequency)

In the maritime context, UHF (Ultra High Frequency) refers to the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves (radio waves) between 300 megahertz (MHz) and 3 gigahertz (GHz), also known as the decimetre band as the wavelengths range from one meter to one decimetre. UHF is extensively used in the maritime industry for various communication and navigation purposes. Ships often use UHF for short-range communication, typically line-of-sight distance. It is also used for data communication between the ship and port authorities, as well as between different ships. UHF signals are used in radar systems, which are crucial for navigation and collision avoidance at sea. These radar systems emit UHF radio waves that bounce off objects and return to the radar system, allowing the determination of the object's position and speed. UHF is also used in Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), which transmit data such as a ship's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety-related information to other ships and traffic management stations.
