Underway

Underway is a term used in maritime context to describe a vessel that is not at anchor, or made fast to the shore, or aground. A vessel is considered to be underway when it is not stationary and is making way through the water. This includes when the vessel is being towed, pushed, or is drifting. When a vessel is underway, it is subject to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and must display the appropriate navigation lights and signals. The term is also used to describe the state of a vessel when it is in motion, but not yet fully operational, such as during sea trials or when leaving or entering a port.
