United Nations Convention On The Law Of The Sea (UNCLOS)
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), also known as the Law of the Sea Treaty, is an international agreement that establishes a legal framework for all marine and maritime activities. It was adopted and signed in 1982 and came into force in 1994. UNCLOS defines the rights and responsibilities of nations in their use of the world's oceans, establishing guidelines for businesses, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources. It covers a broad range of oceanic issues, including the territorial sea and contiguous zone, the continental shelf, the high seas, the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the international seabed area. UNCLOS also provides a mechanism for the settlement of disputes concerning ocean matters. It is recognized by the majority of countries and is considered the 'constitution of the oceans'.
