Upwind
Upwind refers to the direction from which the wind is blowing. In sailing, it is the direction towards which a vessel is sailing against the wind. Sailing upwind requires a vessel to tack, which involves turning the bow of the vessel through the wind so that the sails fill on the opposite side. This is a slower and more difficult point of sail than sailing downwind, as the vessel must make a series of zigzag maneuvers to make progress towards its destination. Upwind sailing is also known as beating or close-hauled sailing.
