Freeboard

Freeboard is the distance between the waterline and the upper deck level measured vertically at the ship's side. It is the minimum vertical distance from the surface of the water to the gunwale (deck) of the ship. Freeboard is an important factor in determining the seaworthiness of a ship, as it ensures that the ship remains afloat and stable in various weather conditions. The amount of freeboard required depends on the type of ship, its size, and the area of operation. A ship with inadequate freeboard may be at risk of flooding and capsizing in rough seas.
