Very High Frequency (VHF)

In the maritime context, Very High Frequency (VHF) refers to a range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves from 30 to 300 MHz, with corresponding wavelengths of ten meters to one meter. VHF is commonly used for marine communications, particularly in coastal or inland waters where its range of up to 60 nautical miles is sufficient for most maritime communication needs. VHF radio is a critical tool for navigation and safety at sea, providing a reliable means of communication between vessels, and between vessels and shore stations. It is used for a variety of purposes, including distress signaling, ship-to-ship communication, navigation instructions, weather information, and coordination of search and rescue operations. VHF radio systems on ships are typically equipped with digital selective calling (DSC) capabilities, which allow for direct contact with specific vessels or shore stations, and automatic identification system (AIS) capabilities, which transmit and receive information about the ship's identity, position, course, and speed to and from other nearby vessels and shore stations.
