Vessel Stability
Vessel stability refers to the ability of a ship to return to its original position after being disturbed by external forces such as waves, wind, and cargo loading/unloading. It is crucial for the safety of the ship, crew, and cargo. Stability is determined by the ship's center of gravity (CG) and center of buoyancy (CB). If the CG is too high or the CB is too low, the ship may capsize. Stability can be improved by ballasting, shifting cargo, or adding weight to the bottom of the ship. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established regulations for minimum stability requirements for different types of ships.
