Mortise

In maritime context, a mortise is a rectangular hole or slot made in a piece of wood or other material to receive a tenon of the same dimensions for the purpose of joining two pieces together. Mortise and tenon joints are commonly used in shipbuilding for joining the frames to the keel, the stem, and the sternpost. The mortise is usually cut into the frame and the tenon is cut onto the keel, stem, or sternpost. This type of joint provides a strong and rigid connection that can withstand the stresses of the sea. Mortises are also used in the construction of masts, spars, and other wooden components of a ship.
