Vessel Traffic Service
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a shore-based service implemented by a competent authority, designed to improve the safety and efficiency of vessel traffic and to protect the environment. The service should have the capability to interact with the traffic and to respond to traffic situations developing in the VTS area. The service should be operated by qualified personnel who have access to appropriate communication and navigational equipment, and who can provide information, advice, and assistance to the masters of vessels transiting the area. VTS can also assist in the organization of search and rescue operations and in the event of pollution incidents. The service operates in accordance with any applicable IMO guidelines and recommendations.
