Whiskers

Whiskers are thin, long and flexible metal rods that are attached to the bowsprit of a sailing ship. They are used to support the jib-boom and to provide additional stability to the mast. Whiskers are typically used when sailing downwind or in light winds, as they help to keep the jib from collapsing and provide additional sail area. They are also used to prevent the jib from chafing against the shrouds or stays. Whiskers are usually made of steel or aluminum and are secured to the bowsprit with shackles or other fittings.
