Shrouds

Shrouds are a set of ropes or cables that run from the mastheads to the sides of the ship to provide lateral support to the mast. They are an essential part of the standing rigging and help to keep the mast upright. Shrouds are typically made of steel wire or synthetic fiber and are secured to the mast with shackles or other fittings. They are tensioned using turnbuckles or other tensioning devices to ensure that the mast remains stable in all conditions. Shrouds are an important safety feature of a sailing vessel, as they help to prevent the mast from collapsing in heavy weather or when subjected to sudden shocks or impacts.
