Yield Stress

Yield stress is the amount of stress that a material can withstand before it begins to deform plastically. In the maritime context, yield stress is an important factor in determining the strength of a ship's hull and other structural components. It is particularly important in the design and construction of ships that are intended to operate in harsh environments, such as ice-covered waters or heavy seas. The yield stress of a material is typically measured using a tensile test, which involves applying a gradually increasing load to a sample of the material until it begins to deform. The yield stress is then calculated based on the point at which the material begins to deform plastically.
