Adrift

Adrift refers to a vessel that is floating without any propulsion or steering. It can be caused by various reasons such as engine failure, loss of sails, or being cut off from a towline. A vessel that is adrift is at the mercy of the wind and currents, and can pose a danger to other vessels in the vicinity. In case of an emergency, a vessel can intentionally be put adrift to avoid sinking or running aground. However, being adrift for an extended period can lead to a shortage of supplies and endanger the crew. Therefore, it is important for vessels to have proper safety equipment and procedures in place to prevent and manage situations where a vessel may become adrift.
