AMVER

Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) is a worldwide voluntary reporting system sponsored by the United States Coast Guard. It is a computer-based global ship reporting system used worldwide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea. The system is based on ships reporting their positions and other relevant information to the AMVER center, which can then divert the nearest suitable ship or ships to provide assistance. The system is free of charge and open to all ships of any flag. It is a valuable tool for maritime safety and has been credited with saving thousands of lives since its inception in 1958.
