Ballast Keel

A ballast keel is a heavy, elongated structure that is attached to the bottom of a sailboat's hull to lower the center of gravity and improve stability. It is typically made of lead or iron and is shaped like a fin to minimize drag. The weight of the ballast keel counteracts the force of the wind on the sails, preventing the boat from capsizing or heeling excessively. Ballast keels can be fixed or retractable, and their size and shape depend on the size and design of the boat. They are an essential component of most sailboats, especially those designed for racing or offshore cruising.
