Beach Nourishment

Beach nourishment is a coastal management strategy that involves adding sand or sediment to an eroding beach to widen the existing beach and buffer the shoreline from erosion. This process is typically done using dredging equipment to extract sand from offshore sources and then pumping it onto the beach. Beach nourishment is often used as a response to beach erosion caused by natural processes such as storms or longshore drift, or as a preventative measure against future erosion. The benefits of beach nourishment include increased recreational opportunities, protection of coastal infrastructure, and preservation of natural habitats. However, it can also have negative impacts on marine ecosystems and disrupt natural sediment transport processes.
