Storms

Storms are natural phenomena characterized by strong winds, heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. In the maritime context, storms can be particularly dangerous for ships and boats, as they can cause damage to the vessel, injure crew members, and even lead to sinking. Storms can be classified according to their wind speed, with tropical storms having winds of 39 to 73 mph, hurricanes having winds of 74 mph or higher, and cyclones having winds of 74 mph or higher in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific and 39 to 73 mph in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Mariners must be aware of the weather forecast and take appropriate measures to avoid storms, such as altering course, reducing speed, or seeking shelter in a safe harbor.
