Maritime Safety Management
Maritime Safety Management refers to the systematic approach to managing safety, including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures. It is a critical aspect of the maritime industry, aimed at preventing accidents, injuries, and environmental damage that could result from maritime operations. This involves the implementation of safety policies, risk assessment, safety training, and emergency preparedness. The International Safety Management (ISM) Code, developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention. It requires a safety management system to be established by the shipowner or ship manager. The system includes various functional requirements such as a safety and environmental protection policy, defined levels of authority and lines of communication between personnel, procedures for reporting accidents and non-conformities, procedures to prepare for and respond to emergency situations, and procedures for internal audits and management reviews.
