Boot-topping

Boot-topping is a painted stripe on the hull of a ship that is applied where the water meets the hull. It is usually painted in a contrasting color to the hull and is used to protect the hull from marine growth and fouling. Boot-topping also serves as a visual reference for the waterline and helps to make the ship look more aesthetically pleasing. The term 'boot-topping' is believed to have originated from the practice of painting the tops of boots with a darker color to protect them from mud and water.
