Long Range Identification And Tracking
Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) is a global maritime system established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the identification and tracking of ships. It is designed to enhance maritime security by providing coastal states with the ability to obtain information about the identity, location, and course of ships sailing within their waters. The system operates via satellite communication, allowing for the tracking of vessels beyond the range of traditional coastal radar systems. LRIT data is transmitted at least every six hours, but can be requested more frequently if necessary. The system is mandatory for all passenger ships, cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and above, and mobile offshore drilling units. The LRIT system provides a significant contribution to maritime domain awareness, enabling improved response to potential maritime security threats and facilitating more efficient use of maritime security resources.
