Butt Joint

A butt joint is a type of joint in which two pieces of material are joined by simply placing their ends together without any overlapping. In the maritime context, a butt joint is commonly used in shipbuilding to join two planks or plates end-to-end. The joint is then secured with fasteners such as nails, screws, or bolts. Butt joints are often reinforced with a backing strip or a doubler plate to increase their strength and stiffness. The quality of a butt joint depends on the accuracy of the cut, the fit between the two pieces, and the strength of the fasteners used. A well-made butt joint can be as strong as the material itself.
