Codes

In maritime context, codes refer to a set of standardized rules and regulations that govern the operation of ships and ensure safety at sea. These codes cover a wide range of topics such as ship design, construction, equipment, crew training, navigation, communication, and environmental protection. The most important codes in the maritime industry are the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. Compliance with these codes is mandatory for all ships engaged in international trade and is enforced by flag states and port states.
