A coordinate system is a reference system used to represent the positions of objects in a two or three-dimensional space. In the maritime context, a coordinate system is used to determine the location of a vessel on the earth's surface. The most commonly used coordinate system in navigation is the geographic coordinate system, which uses latitude and longitude to specify a vessel's position. Other coordinate systems used in maritime navigation include the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system and the Mercator projection.
