Countersunk Hole

A countersunk hole is a conical-shaped hole that is drilled or milled into a material, typically metal, to allow a flat-head screw or bolt to sit flush with the surface of the material. In the maritime context, countersunk holes are commonly used in shipbuilding to attach various components such as deck fittings, hatches, and machinery. Countersinking the holes ensures that the fasteners do not protrude above the surface, which could cause damage to the ship's hull or interfere with the movement of cargo. The size and depth of the countersunk hole are determined by the size and type of fastener being used, as well as the thickness and type of material being fastened.
