Pennant

A pennant is a long, narrow flag that is typically used for signaling or identification purposes. In maritime context, pennants are used to indicate the presence of a senior officer aboard a ship, such as a commodore or admiral. These pennants are often referred to as command pennants and are flown from the masthead of the ship. Pennants can also be used to indicate the type of ship, such as a commissioning pennant for a newly commissioned vessel or a distinguishing pennant for a ship that has performed a notable feat. In addition, pennants can be used to signal messages, such as the hoisting of a quarantine pennant to indicate a ship is under quarantine.
