Heading

Heading refers to the direction in which a ship or aircraft is pointed, usually expressed as the number of degrees clockwise from north. It is an important navigational concept that helps sailors and pilots to determine their position and chart a course. The heading of a vessel can be determined using a compass, gyrocompass, or other navigational instruments. It is important to maintain a steady heading in order to stay on course and avoid collisions with other vessels. Changes in heading can be made by adjusting the ship's rudder or the aircraft's control surfaces. In addition to true heading, there are also magnetic and compass headings, which take into account the magnetic declination of the earth's magnetic field.
