Double-hull Design

Double-hull design refers to a ship construction method where the vessel's bottom and sides have two complete layers of watertight hull surface. The double hull is a design and construction method used in the maritime industry to improve the safety and resilience of ships, particularly oil tankers and other large cargo vessels. The primary purpose of this design is to prevent or minimize potential leaks and spills in the event of a breach in the outer hull. The space between the two hulls can be used for storage, ballast, or as an additional protective layer against potential damage from grounding, collision, or other maritime accidents. The double-hull design has been mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for all oil tankers over 5,000 tons deadweight, following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. This design significantly reduces the risk of oil pollution in the event of an accident, making it a crucial aspect of modern maritime safety standards.
