Energy Efficiency Design Index
The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is a measure developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to quantify the energy efficiency of new ships. It is a non-dimensional index calculated by considering the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted per transport work, which is a function of the ship's size, speed, and cargo capacity. The EEDI is used to set a minimum energy efficiency level for new ships, encouraging improvements in ship design and promoting the use of more energy-efficient (lower CO2 emitting) equipment and engines. The EEDI applies to specific ship types of 400 gross tonnage and above engaged in international voyages. The index is part of the IMO's broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. The EEDI is calculated during the design process of a new ship and is verified at the time of ship construction by recognized organizations.
